These antique rose gold and rose cut diamond earrings were made in the Victorian era, likely in the 1880s if not earlier. The close-backed foil-lined diamonds are a wonderful steely gray color which is a beautiful and unique contrast against the pink hue of the gold. The stones are very reflective yet their subtle color makes them more modest than showy. The settings are rather unique and a little tricky to describe in words but my best explanation is that the diamonds are being suspended by many elongated prongs that taper in a deep, airy version of a buttercup or belcher mounting. The open space between the prongs is darkly shaded in contrast against the polished prongs yet when viewed from the side the daylight streams through. Very unique! The gently curved wires are sturdy and have secure lever-back closures. The length from the top of the wire to the bottom of the setting is 15mm. The width of the settings alone is 9mm while the depth from the back if the mounting to the table of the diamond is 6.5mm.
